Generationals gaps

“When I was a little girl, my family used to live in Turin, six of us in only two small rooms, a corridor, and a very small kitchen. So I was bound to sleep in a very uncomfortable sofa placed in the corridor just in front of the bath room. Consequently, during the night and in the early morning, I heard and saw everybody going in and out from it and I was well aware of all digestive problems of my parents and my three brothers…. But when FIAT suddenly gave us a bigger apartment in the suburbs of Turin, consisting of four rooms, a much bigger kitchen, a balcony and, for the first time in my life, even a telephone, I felt like touching heaven with my fingers, no matter if I had to wake up at five o’clock in the morning, then walk for more then a mile to catch the bus that finally dropped me in the centre of the city, where I used to work for a shirt- maker lady.
Nevertheless, I was so happy and no other subsequent change of apartment in my whole life gave me more joy.
I don’t think that today boys and girls would react the same way!.. In fact, when you, nowadays present your sons with a wonderful gift, they seem at first enthusiastic with even a sparkling glittering in their eyes, but the day after, they just forget about it and that’s all.”
